システム内の交換ユニット（RU）が欠陥ユニットを置き換えること．この置換作業は，システムが通常の機能を果たしている間にシステム自身によって行われる（ただし，性能が低下する可能性はある）．自動スワップは，物理的な置換とは異なり，機能的な置換で，人間の介在を必要としない．しかし，結局のところは，欠陥部品は物理的なホット，ウォームもしくはコールドのスワップオペレーションによって入れ換えられる必要がある． 参照：cold swap, hot swap, warm swap, hot spare

The substitution of a replacement unit (RU) in a system for a defective one, where the substitution is performed by the system itself while it continues to perform its normal function (possibly at a reduced rate of performance). Automatic swaps are functional rather than physical substitutions, and do not require human intervention. Ultimately, however, defective components must be replaced in a physical hot, warm, or cold swap operation. cf. cold swap, hot swap, warm swap, hot spare.
